Kurt Nordwall ~ Custom made Museum Quality Framing
Specializing in Dutch Ripple mouldings.
Kurt worked at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) for 20 years as a frame technician. Intrigued by the beautiful Dutch Ripple frames in the collection, he wanted to know how they were made. While doing research he found a drawing of a ripple frame machine from the 17th century in the Diderot Encyclopedia. This encouraged him to do further investigating. MIA awarded him a travel grant to go to London and Amsterdam to research frames. After returning to Minnesota he built his own “wave engine”. Kurt has made over 100 tempered steel blades for cutting moulding designs and is able to produce flamleisten and wellenleisten patterns as well as simple profiles. Working with curators, conservationists, and preparators his frames are now hanging in museums, private collections and universities.
Initially interested in print making, Kurt’s creative endeavors have led him to painting, frame design and metal work. Over time he has made kaleidoscopes and telegraph keys, Menorahs, Hanukkah Lamps and miscellaneous creative items that have peaked his interest.
